What would you say to the person you were one year ago?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for October 24, 2007:
Janet just posted an answer to this question and it took awhile to figure out....when the heck did Siona ask this question? (turns out October 24, 2007). So I guess we're allowed to travel back in time & pick the questions we like and answer them, whenever we're so inspired.
Which is apropos, as this is a time-travel type question. We're zinging backwards for a conversation with our previous self. I'm excited. Let's see what the two selves have to say:
Current Self: Hello, back there, how are you doing?
Old Self: Don't be silly. You know how I'm doing. I'm doing a month-long retreat here at home. Shhh..... it's a silent retreat..... please....
Current Self: no, no. It's OK to talk, just for a few moments. You're going to make it through the month! You're going to do it! Just relax, don't worry. And you have NO IDEA what this year is going to bring. You are going to be SO EXCITED at everything is that is going to happen.
Old Self: please, shhhh..... you're getting on my nerves. NOW is what is happening. This moment is all that counts. Who cares about the future?
Current Self: You do. You just don't know it yet? Do you want a clue about what's gong to happen....?
Old Self: If you must. (sigh....)
Current Self: Everything you ever dreamed is gonna come true! You are going to start writing and sharing with people. You are going to meet more people than you ever dreamed. The world is going to open up. You're going to meet people all over the world on an on-line community called Gaia. Your creativity is going to jump start. You are going to be fulfilled in ways you've been searching since....since forever. This is the year.
Old Self: you mean I'll never be unhappy again?
Current Self: Not at all. You'll be unhappy. You'll be happy. You'll be sad, you'll cry, you'll have all the same old emotions. But something inside you will be fulfilled. It will be like the empty space inside of you is suddenly....content. So even while a thousand emotions and thoughts and feelings will continue to pass through, there will be something so fulfilled that....are you ready for this....you won't even want to be enlightened anymore.
Old Self: get out of here.
Current Self: seriously.
Old Self: well you're wrong about that one.
Current Self: OK, keep meditating. You'll see. Actually, keep meditating & go so deep that you reach the bottom of that empty hole inside you. Keep meditating and being silent until you don't care if you ever see another person again.
Old Self: well thank you for your input. That would be lovely if that came to happen, but I really don't care. Seriously. So skedaddle back into the future, please. THIS MOMENT IS WHAT COUNTS. Who cares what happens in the next one? Adios, goodbye, toodaloo!
Current Self (to current self): wow, you really can't go back and talk to previous incarnations, can you? Because they need to learn what they need to learn. You could tell them that the world is falling apart or that everything wonderful was going to happen.....and it wouldn't matter. Because it's one step at a time. (Shouting backwards to Old Self): I love you! Don't you forget that. You're going to be fine....

Dear Liza (Lisa, Elisa, Liza….who are all you people? laughing at the similarities of names, mind you)…..one should never attend a Voice Dialogue workshop and fall in love with it. It’s dangerous. Corrupts many future blogs. :) by the way, are you telling your future self it’s going to be a good year? Or your current self? bigger smile…

Lisa, Elisa, Liza.. oh my such confusion! LOL
Leez, what I love about Voice Dialogue more than anything is that it’s a technique that seems to lead directly into the Knowing of the one Self. That’s why I keep sharing it here. In hopes that others will try it. And through the dividing up the self one paradoxically begins to discover what exists beyond all the little selves….something untouchable even in the changing times.

I think I endowed you with a new Medicine Name, which might have been Two Kathys Who Are One. I probably was honored and delighted to be inspired by and inspire you, my Gaia-Michigander-Bloggin-Sister.
Most likely I credited barefoot girl for leading me to the question and mused about the way it seems impossible to trace anything back to its beginning. There might have been a made-up word (like “webby”) as a descriptor for our connectedness.
Anyhoo, if I could say anything to the Janet of 5 minutes ago, it would be this: don’t forget to copy before hitting Add Comment.

ah, but the person I was (am) a year ago–along with the person I will be (am) in a year–and I, right now, are one, in (generally silent) conversation, harmony every step of the way…..for eternity.

Dear Janet, oh isn’t that awful when we think we’ve been funny and brilliant and humorous….and some grumpy old spirit in the Netherworlds stole it for his very own? I think you re-constructred admirably. However, as to only TWO Kathy’s what are you thinking? There are at least a zillion. And I haven’t been able to find one that will claim to be a “Kathy”. They’re all just energies passing through.
C.G., I think there might be a silent harmonious energy within me as well. There has to be if you’re showing up in the All! I think the All that we are first shows up within ourselves, and then is mirrored in the outer world. Or perhaps it happens simultaneously. I don’t see much difference between the energies moving through “Kathy”–whoever she may be–and the energies soaring through Gaia and the larger world.
We’re a hologram. I love allowing the voices their different takes on the world. On some level it may not sound harmonious because everyone’s such an individual. But on another level we’re all just flowers and one is speaking daisy-talk and the other aster-talk and another skunk-cabbage talk.
Love you Kathy, love this blog and love to talk to myself too and the flowers and…!
I was just thinking of the two who were having a conversation at the moment;-)
But we can make it Many Kathy’s if you like. Or Many Flowers. I love the idea of the language of flowers. Plants talk to me all the time, so it only makes sense.
You are always You right now, ever changing with the realities of now.
That is just my opinion through Buddhist practice - there is no permanent self. When all the wondering is over, you have You. You learn this by stilling your mind..
If we figure out something better to do, we should just do it and just be.
To myself a year ago, I would say.
“Good-bye, and thank you; it’s been really nice knowing you.”

Mimi, I think we’re saying the same thing in a different language. You are absolutely right: I don’t believe there is a permanent self. The stilling of the mind often does teach us that.However, I believe the activity of the mind can also teach us that. Some people find it in the stilling (I think most people do) but some people find it in the movement. It’s all form and emptiness. I love what you would say to your former self. As for looking for something, I don’t feel like I’m looking for anything. That’s been the gift of the last year. The looking and searching dissolved. It sounds like this may has happened through your Buddhist practice as well? Love, Kathy

Triple oops! I’m sorry. I’ve been unfaithful to the All. The seeker part of the Universe is offended. It says “can’t you find me? I live in all of you. See if you can find me….” Thus, I apologize to the Seeker Parts of the All. I did not mean to betray, to disown you. You can have a voice here. You can exist. Pardon….
